SUMMER SCHOOL 2019 PROGRAM
 
 Dates: June 13 – July 12 (no school Thursday, July 4 and Friday July 5)
Session 1: Classes meet daily from 8:00 am -11:10am
Session 2: Classes meet daily from 11:45 am-2:55 pm

All Summer School courses will be offered for intervention purposes only. Only students who have received a “D” or “F” may apply for Summer School.
 
Please speak to your student’s counselor for alternative suggestions IF your student does not get into the class they have chosen.
Only Service Learning (see description below) will be offered to all students.
 
Deadline for applications is Friday, May 3, 2019. Applications received after this date will be placed on a first come, first served basis for classes that may become closed .
 
Priority is given to Seniors in danger of not graduating and then continuing in this order: Juniors, Sophomores, Freshman (with F grades); Juniors, Sophomores, Freshman (with D grades).
 
Accepted students will be notified by mail or phone beginning May 2019
 
 
 
 
NON-DEPARTMENTAL OFFERINGS
 
Service Learning (Teacher Cadet Program) (Grade 9-12) Sessions 1  (5 units per session)
This course is offered to all students and can be used to earn elective credit. This is an introduction to child psychology, learning styles, teaching and the educational process. Students are provided with an opportunity to gain on-the-job experience helping students at elementary schools in the District under the supervision of a teacher.
 
ENGLISH
 
Freshman English Session 1 and/or 2 (5 units per session)
Prerequisite: Student is repeating one or both semesters of Freshman English. This literature-based course integrates reading, writing, and research.
 
Sophomore English Session 1 and/or 2 (5 units per session)
Prerequisite: Student is repeating one or both semesters of Sophomore English. This literature-based course integrates reading, writing, and speech.
 
American Literature Session 1 and/or 2 (5 units per session)
Prerequisite: Failure of Junior or Senior English class. This literature-based course integrates reading, writing, and analysis.
 
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
 
Physical Education Session 1 and/or 2 (5 units per session)
Prerequisite: Students should be repeating Physical Education. This course provides the opportunity for those students who must make up Physical Education units in order to graduate.
 
MATHEMATICS
 
Students must attend daily for the 2 ¼ hours. Beyond that, students must continue to work independently at home, OR complete independent hours at school. If the teacher determines the student needs additional instruction and/or the independent work is not completed at home to meet the progress requirement, the student may be required to participate in Study Hall after the morning session.  Requirement for Summer School attendance will be applied. Students who miss three days will be dropped from the course.
 
Students can take tests or work on their “independent hours” needed in a room other than where teaching sessions are being held. For example, a student in Session 1 may work independently during Session 2 in another room.
 
During each session, there will be a teacher available focused on daily small group instruction based on results from independent lessons and assessments.  
 
Study Hall will be available for students during the afternoon Summer School session to work on their independent hours.
 
Integrated I
Session 1 - Optional/Required Study Hall 8:00 - 9:00 am, class time 9:00 - 11:10 am with lunch being 11:10 - 11:45 am (5 units per semester/session)  First group of  Integrated Math students meet for Semester 1 or Semester 2 course work
Prerequisite: Students should be repeating Integrated I. This is the first course in the Integrated Math sequence.
Session 2 - Class time 11:45 - 1:55 pm, Optional/Required Study Hall 2:00 - 3:00 pm Second group of  Integrated Math I students meet for Semester 1 or 2 course work.
 
Integrated II
Session 1 - Optional/Required Study Hall 8:00 - 9:00 am, class time 9:00 - 11:10 am with lunch being 11:10 - 11:45 am  (5 units per semester/session)  First group of  Integrated Math students meet for Semester 1 or Semester 2 course work
Prerequisite: Students should be repeating Integrated II. This is the second course in the Integrated Math sequence.
Session 2 Class time 11:45 - 1:55 pm, Optional/Required Study Hall 2:00 - 3:00 pm  Second group of  Integrated Math II students meet for Semester 1 or 2 course work.
 
SOCIAL STUDIES
 
Comparative Cultures and Geography (CCG) Session 2 (5 units)
Prerequisite: Students must be repeating CCG. This course teaches students how geography and culture have shaped, and continue to shape our lives. Emphasis is placed on the main themes of geography and on those factors that develop cultures: geography, art, religion, music, family patterns, ethnicity, race and technology.
 
Modern World History Session 1 and/or 2 (5 units per session)
Prerequisite: Student is repeating one or both semesters of Modern World History. This course presents an overview survey of European History, World Wars I and II, the 20th Century, and the Non-Western World.
 
U.S. History Session 1 and/or 2 (5 units per session)
Prerequisite: Student is repeating one or both semesters of U.S. History. This course highlights the social and cultural trends in the United States.
 
U.S. Government (Independent Study) Session 1 or 2 (5 units)
Prerequisite: Student is repeating Government. This course gives a study of the powers and practices of the Congress, Presidency, Supreme Court, and local, state and federal government.
 
Economics (Independent Study) Session 1 or 2 (5 units)
Prerequisite: Student is repeating Economics. This course provides study of basic economic principles and their applications in the American system.
 
SCIENCE
 
Health Session 1 or 2 (5 units)
Prerequisite: Student is repeating Health. This course mirrors the content taught during the school year.
 
Biology Session 1 and/or 2 (5 units per session)
Prerequisite: Student is repeating Biology. This course mirrors the content taught during the school year.
Physical Science Session 1 and/or 2 (5 units per session)
Prerequisite: Student must have failed a physical science course during the school ear.
